Bluesette 05:20
Poor little, sad little blue Bluesette Don't you cry, don't you fret You can bet one lucky day you'll waken And your blues will be forsaken Some lucky day lovely love will come your way As long as there's love in your heart to share Dear Bluesette, don't despair Some blue boy is waiting just like you To find a someone to be true to Two loving arms you can nestle in and stay Pretty little Bluesette, musn't be a mourner Ain't you heard the news yet? Love's 'round the corner Love wrapped in rainbows and tied with pink ribbons To make your your next springtime your gold wedding ring time Dry your eyes Don't you pout don't you fret Goody good times are coming, Bluesette! Goody good, goody good, goody good's coming!

Spring this year has got me feeling Like a horse that never left the post I lie in my room staring up at the ceiling Spring can really hang you up the most Morning's kiss wakes trees and flowers And to them I often drink a toast I walk in the park just to kill the lonely hours Spring can really hang you up the most All afternoon those birds twitter-twit I know the tune, "This is love, this is it!" Heard it before and I know the score And I've decided that spring is a bore Doctors once prescribed a tonic "Sulphur and molasses" was the dose Didn't help a bit, my condition must be chronic Spring can really hang you up the most Love came my way, I hoped it would last We had our day, now that's all in the past Spring came along a season of sun Full of sweet promise but something went wrong Love seemed sure around the New Year Now it's April, love is just a ghost Spring arrived on time, only what became of you, dear? Spring can really hang you up the most All alone, the party's over Old man winter was a gracious host But when you keep praying for snow to hide the clover Spring can really hang you up the most Spring is here so why can't my heart dance this rhumba?

There will be many other nights like this And I'll be standing here with someone new There will be other songs to sing Another fall, another spring But there will never be another you There will be other lips that I may kiss But they won't thrill me like yours used to do Yes, I may dream a million dreams But how can they come true If there will never ever be another you?
4.
April in Paris, chestnuts in blossom Holiday tables under the trees April in Paris, this is a feeling That no one can ever reprise I never knew the charm of spring I never met it face to face I never knew my heart could sing Never missed a warm embrace Till April in Paris Whom can I run to What have you done to my heart?
5.
I get along without you very well Of course, I do Except when soft rains fall And drip from leaves, then I recall The thrill of being sheltered in your arms Of course, I do But I get along without you very well I've forgotten you just like I should Of course, I have Except to hear your name Or someone's laugh that is the same But I've forgotten you just like I should What a guy What a fool am I To think my breaking heart Could kid the moon What's in store? Should I phone once more? No, it's best that I stick to my tune I get along without you very well Of course, I do Except perhaps in spring But I should never think of spring For that would surely break my heart in two
6.
You are the promised kiss of springtime That makes the lonely winter seem long. You are the breathless hush of evening That trembles on the brink of a lovely song. You are the angel glow that lights a star, The dearest things I know are what you are. Some day my happy arms will hold you, And some day I'll know that moment divine, When all the things you are, are mine!

When true lovers meet in Mayfair, so the legends tell Songbirds sing Winter turns to Spring Every winding street in Mayfair falls beneath the spell I know such enchantment can be 'Cause it happened one evening to me That certain night, the night we met There was magic abroad in the air There were angels dining at the Ritz And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square I may be right, I may be wrong But I'm perfectly willing to swear That when you turned and smiled at me A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square The moon that lingered over London town Poor puzzled moon, he wore a frown How could he know we two were so in love? The whole damn world seemed upside down The streets of town were paved with stars It was such a romantic affair And as we kissed and said goodnight A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square How strange it was how sweet and strange There was never a dream to compare To those hazy, crazy nights we met And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square This heart of mine Loud and fast Like a merry-go-round in a fair We would dance cheek to cheek And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square The dawn came stealing up, all gold and blue To interrupt our rendez-vous I still remember how you smiled and said "Was that a dream or was it true?" Our homeward step was just as light As the dancing feet of Astaire And like an echo far away A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square I know, 'cause I was there That night in Berkeley Square

I met a pretty girl one fine Spring day I asked her if she’d like to walk my way She said she had a special path to go And that her folks had named her ‘Calypso’ The girl could see a real good thing I know She said she’d really like to take me home But she’s a singer back in Port-Of-Spain Where she's singing jazz in a calypso way - she said "With rum and Coca Cola flowing And my band blowin’ Parker tunes you’ll be real glad You took a sun and sea vacation To my nation The home of steel band- Trinidad" You know she didn’t have to ask me twice ‘Cause everything about Calypso’s nice With all the beauty this young lady has I want to marry calypso and jazz!

I was out promenadin' And high hopes was fadin' That dreams never really come true When up jumped Spring time I got a look at you All at once it was heady A gaze long and steady Made sounds of the patter grow dim And up jumped Spring time And love came on in Now my heart wants to cheer Life's sweet promise is here And love is a lov-er-ly thing And we're sweethearts together Like bird and the feather Our love is as free as the wind Cause up jumped Spring time So, hello my friend
10.
If ever I would leave you It wouldn't be in summer Seeing you in summer I never would go Your hair streaked with sunlight Your lips red as flame Your face with a lustre That puts gold to shame! But if I'd ever leave you It couldn't be in autumn How I'd leave in autumn I never will know I've seen how you sparkle When fall nips the air I know you in autumn And I must be there And could I leave you Running merrily through the snow? Or on a wintry evening When you catch the fire's glow? If ever I would leave you How could it be in springtime? Knowing how in Spring I'm bewitched by you so? Oh, no! Not in springtime! Summer, winter or fall! No, never could I leave you at all! How could I leave you Running merrily through the snow? Or on a wintry evening When you catch the fire's glow? If ever I would leave you It could never be in springtime Knowing how in Spring I'm bewitched by you so? Oh, no! Not in springtime! Summer, winter or fall! No, never could I leave you at all! No, never could I leave you...

Listen once, and please listen twice Yeah, better listen to my advice Hide your heart from sight, lock your dreams at night It could happen to you Don't count stars or you might stumble Someone drops a sigh and down you tumble Keep an eye on spring, run when church bells ring It could happen to you All I did was wonder how your arms would be And it happened to me Play it, Bill… Better run, better hide Yes, I’m warnin’ If it's Cupid’s arrows You’re avoidin’ Keep your head and your heart under cover ‘Cause someone's out there lookin’ for a lover Keep your profile low so they don’t see ya I think you better stay off social media! Hide your heart from sight, lock your dreams at night It could happen to you Don't count stars or you might stumble Someone drops a sigh and down you tumble Keep an eye on spring, run when church bells ring It could happen to you All I did was wonder how your arms would be And it happened to me It is plain to see - WATCH OUT! It could easily happen to you

The leaves of brown came tumbling down, remember In September in the rain The sun went out just like a dying ember That September in the rain To every word of love I heard you whisper The raindrops seemed to play a sweet refrain Though spring is here to me it's still September That September in the rain
13.
The very thought of you makes my heart sing Like an April breeze on the wings of spring And you appear in all your splendor My one and only love The shadows fall and spread their mystic charms In the hush of night while you're in my arms I feel your lips, so warm and tender My one and only love The touch of your hand is like heaven A heaven that I've never known The blush on your cheek whenever I speak Tells me that you are my own You fill my eager heart with such desire Every kiss you give sets my soul on fire I give myself in sweet surrender My one and only love My one and only love
14.
When lonely feelings chill The meadows of your mind Just think if winter comes Can Spring be far behind? Beneath the deepest snows The secret of a rose Is merely that it knows You must believe in Spring Just as a tree is sure Its leaves will reappear It knows its emptiness Is just a time of year The frozen mountains dreams Of April's melting streams How crystal clear it seems You must believe in Spring You must believe in love And trust it's on its way Just as a sleeping rose Awaits the kiss of May So in a world of snow Of things that come and go Where what you think you know You can't be certain of You must believe in Spring and love You must believe in love And trust it's on its way Just as a sleeping rose Awaits the kiss of May So in a world of snow Of things that come and go Where what you think you know You can't be certain of You must believe in Spring and love

about

'Up Jumped Spring' is my debut album as a jazz vocalist although I've been active both as a professional singer and musician and in artist management for over 30 years now.
Spring is very much the season of love, fresh hopes and new growth.
The title of the album is taken from Freddie Hubbard's tune and it has significance to me having just remarried and started a new chapter in my life- which really did come as a huge, but wonderful surprise.
The Great American Songbook offers so many great tunes that celebrate Spring, so recording an album of some of my favourite jazz standards that reference the season felt like a really natural fit.
That being said, I didn't want to record an album that focussed on me singing a bunch of tunes with Spring titles.
Instead we've recorded a jazz album as a band that features a lot of great playing with the only qualification required of any of the songs on the album being that the actual word 'Spring' jumps up at some point in the lyrics.
Which in itself some of you might find surprising!
